This week has been so much fun because we have really gotten to know the students! We were observed again this past Tuesday and even though the students weren't as angelic as they were the week before they were still awesome! I can't believe how fast they pick up and absorb information! Our teacher and observer are seriously the greatest. I love teaching at Ridgeline SO much. Everyone is so friendly and outgoing and I feel as though I have made friends! I would be so honored to teach at a school if it was anything like it is at Ridgeline!
2. Describe your favorite part of the day.
My favorite part of the day this week has been writing. I love reading their persuasive essays on why Ms. K should or should not eat turkey on Thanksgiving. I could not help but laugh so hard at some of their reasons! They have such a great sense of humor and love to participate in such fun activities! I have also loved reading to the kids during read aloud. It is so fun to see their excitement during the intense parts of the story, they never want me to stop reading!
3. What went well, what didn't work and what did you change?
Ms. K has recess duty every Thursday (which is today). It was snowing and freezing cold today so I stayed inside to help students with their late work. I noticed that every student who had to stay in for late work had a very hard time staying on task and needed to go run around for a few minutes to get out some crazy energy. Usually Ms. K would let these students stay in her room alone while she went and monitored the playground. I thought that this was a really scary idea because the students were already having a hard time staying on task while a teacher was in the room. They also know where her treat jar is and I could just imagine what might happen when no one was there to watch! I would make sure that those students went out to recess for at least a little while, and for the whole time on the day that Ms. K needed to be outside!
4. To help your students you would...
To help my future students I would do reading groups daily like Ms. K. I loved that she has 4 or 5 students assigned for reading groups every day of the week. It was very organized and everyone got the change to talk to Ms. K and have more one on one time with her while they participated in this group. I have learned how important reading is while I have been in this class. Because the students were able to read and comprehend big words, teaching became SO much easier. I would make sure to stress reading in my class because if the students are able to read well, they will excel in all other subjects!
My kids go to your school you are field teaching at. My daughter had your field teachers class. We love it too. I am glad to hear your favorite time of the day is reading. i think this is a good time to just relax and get a break too. In our class we have two students who never get recess due to issues. It is sad to see them miss out on getting energy out.
ReplyDeleteI also had a chance to read during read aloud. I wanted to make sure I read with lots of expressions in order to make the story more exciting. We were reading a book about boys at camp who were competing against each other during a relay. The losers had to wear underpants on their heads for the closing ceremony. Well, as I began reading, I made the voices sound different and the children started laughing and got a terrible case of the giggles. It took a long time for them to calm down. I guess it was okay cause the next day one of the boys wanted me to read again. I like the idea of the reading groups. Our teacher has spelling groups. I'm excited to see you again and hear about all of your adventures. Happy Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteWe have been doing persuasive letters this week too. We gave the kids a scenario that they woke up on a farm and were turkeys. They have to convince the farmer that he shouldn't eat them. It's so fun to hear their reasons and supporting details. They are so creative.
