Our School Mascot!

Describe your teaching day.
Today, my partner Melissa Butler, taught an awesome lesson in front of Professor Byrd. It was good to see a familiar face again. We taught about an explorer using our artifact that Axel had us research. The lesson went great. The students were very interested in analyzing the picture on the manuscript. We are excited for next week for we get to teach 4 days in a row. We are doing an art project making manuscripts from handmade paper and then we are using drama in another lesson.
Describe your favorite part of the day.
Big news today, the young man I am tutoring received a 100% on his spelling test. Apparently it was a bigger deal than I knew. He had never gotten 100% before. My field teacher was very excited about it. This student reads on kindergarten level and is in the resource half of the day. I tried different teaching methods with him like touching your throat for the letter "g" and we created letters using our hands to remind him what the letter looks like. I hope next week we will get another 100%.
What went well, what didn't work and what did you change?
My partner, Melissa Butler and I have developed a good relationship with the students. We have all the kids names memorized. It is fun to see them specifically ask us for help. The students had several question about Professor Byrd visit. They were extra good for us when we taught. The students thought it was funny, that teaching a lesson was like taking a test. We have been so impressed with our field teacher. She does a great job with the students.
To help your students you would...
To help our students, I noticed it is important to make sure you give clear instructions about an assignment. I enjoy helping the students with math. Melissa and I feel like we have made a difference during this time. We always have plenty of students who have questions during this time. It is rewarding to help the students master a step.

  1. It really is rewarding to help a student especially when they have their "ah ha" moments when you are helping them. I absolutely love helping students one on one in the classroom I am in because there is about 5 students that are constantly needing help and I feel that they probably wouldn't get most of that help if I wasn't there. This class has 30 students and they are 4th grade, so that is a lot of students to try and help, so with me and Kristie helping the teacher with these students is definitely helping her and the students excel and I just love it! It really makes you feel good when a student understands what you teach them...teaching is very rewarding that way.
    Miss you by the way!

  3. That is so awesome! I know some kids can find spelling tests incredibly hard, so getting 100% is great! I've definitely noticed what you mentioned about clear instructions. Yesterday, Karen was explaining what we wanted our class to do while handing out a "quiz", and I noticed that the students were too distracted by making sure everyone had their paper to really pay attention to what she was saying. Even I missed half of what she was saying! So clear instructions are definitely good, but timing is very important!

  4. Very cool Amy! That is great about the spelling test and trying different ways for your student to learn to spell. Nice that you have Professor Byrd. She is very awesome!

  5. That is so exciting that you were able to help that student so much! I had a similar experience last year with a girl who was testing really low in math. I had a group or 6 that were all testing low. I told them that I would like them to try something, I asked them to say each day that they love math. Well I only got one girl to do it but her progress was amazing. Her mom sent me a text this year and said that her daughter had tested in the 90 percentile on the seventh grade test and no longer needed resource. It felt so good to know that I was able to help her.
