The first couple days in field went really well. The teacher i'm working with was preparing for conferences and in her school they do child lead conferences. It is a really cool concept and also the first I had heard of it. I think it is great to give the responsibility of the grades to the children.
Our teacher seems to have pretty good control over her class and the students really like her. I noticed that she does the class-yes part of whole brain teaching but that is the only part I have seen up to this point.
There was one little girl who came up to me on the second day and very quietly gave me a brand new halloween pencil. She is really shy but very sweet. It's funny how much things like that can make a person feel good.
We are excited to start teaching lessons this next week. We have talked to our principal a couple of times and are planning on inviting her in to watch us teach. This is going to be SUPER scary but also a very good opportunity to get her on our side for when it comes time to look for a job or possibly get an internship.
I haven't had any bad experiences up to this point and think field is going to be great!
Our first week was going to be w-f but then we found out that the school we are working at didn't have school that friday so we have only been in the classroom for two days. They were both a little different since out teacher was preparing for conferences so we haven't seen how her schedule is going to work yet. But up to this point my favorite part of the day would have to be when the students first walk in. They are excited to be there and the teacher is excited to have them.
Our cooperating teacher asked us to help prepare the students for their very first student lead conferences so we would each take a stack of of folders and rehearse with the students one at a time. I really enjoyed this because the student would pretend like I was their parent and would explain their report card to me. I felt like I got to know the students a little better and in a different way.
There was one time that our cooperating teacher had to deal with a situation in the hall and the kids got a little out of hand. my field partner and I were a little unsure of what the rules were and what the students were expected to be doing so we didn't know if we should calm them down or not. I think if this comes up again I will take control and help the students know what I expect from them when their teacher is out of the room.
Not having school on Friday really threw me off. I felt really uneasy Friday morning when I woke up. I kept thinking what if I goofed up and misunderstood the schedule? I probably had a nightmare about it and the fear was still hanging around. I love our school though, the faculty is amazing you can really feel the good vibes when you enter the school. It's exciting.
ReplyDeleteRachelle, thanks for being such an AMAZING field partner!
ReplyDeleteNot having school on Friday really threw me off too, I had to keep telling myself that the school wasn't open. I agree, the faculty and staff are so sweet and helpful.
