Lately being in the classroom feels so amazing I couldnt imagine doing anything else!
Describe your teaching day.
Today David and I taught out second lesson on ancient Egypt. It was really so much fun! We did not teach our lesson until 10 oclock so in the beginning of class we just did the usual walking around and seeing if any students needed help with their work. When it was our time to teach we jumped right in! We started by showing them a short funny video on the Egyptian Gods. I would totally recommend this video for anyone teaching this subject it is found on smart exhange under egyptian gods. The kids loved it and it got them interested and really engaged. After the video we had a short powerpoint to talk about religion in general in ancient Egypt. We then had them do a jigsaw activity and it seriously went SO good. We let the kids choose thier groups as a treat for listening quietly and they absolutly loved that. The groups had to read through a paper we gave them and then make a short poster on the specific god they were assigned. After we gave them a good amount of time to complete their posters they came up and presented them to the rest of the class. This lesson went so good and Dr. Jay really enjoyed obseving us using this lesson plan.
Favorite part of the Day
My favorite part of today was when this one student I helped out with correcting his test. He brought his grade from a 50 percent all the way up to a 75 percent and he was totally thrilled. After he got his test regraded he came up to show me with excitment. I was really proud of him for going back and making sure he was getting the correct answers. Of course my other favorite part was teaching our lesson! What could be better?!
What went well, what didn't, what would you change?
I think that overall everything went really well today. The groups were excited to work together and then also to present. I think we did a lot better today at keeping the student a little less chatty during the activity so that was a plus. There was one group that had a troublmaker a few times but his teacher jumped in a little and took him outside of the class to talk with him.
To help my student this week...
I will make sure I am ready with the knowledge of my subject I am teaching and make sure I can answer their questions. I will also try and make the way I am explaining things to them in a more clear way that is easier for a 6th grader to understand. I will make sure to use our classroom managment skills to keep them less chatty and under control.
Hope everyone else is having as much fun as David and I!!
Sounds like you're having fun! We're doing ancient Egypt too...it's actually coming along nicely. You make a good point about being able to answer students' questions. We have a poster up in the back of the room so that they can write questions down each day and then we go look them up. And that is sweet that you helped that boy get his grade up...I'm sure he was so happy to have you helping him! :)
