1. Describe your teaching day: Shayla and I usually come about 10-15 minutes before school starts and talk to our cooperating teacher about things she wants us to do that day. Then the students come in and do journals, math, language arts, and social studies. There are a lot of students in our class and they love to talk. Last week we started a math test on double digit multiplication that a lot of students struggled on, so we have been spending a lot of time finishing that test and helping the students get up to speed.
2. Describe your favorite part of the day: I love the journaling that they do! The cooperating teacher writes up a message on the board that the students can respond to or they can write their own messages. I think it is an excellent way to get kids into "school mode" in the morning.
3. What went well, what didn't work, what did you change: In our first lesson we talked about petroglyphs. We actually made a new digital story with imovie and it was really fun. It got the students really engaged and in my opinion, worked well. I think we could have used better classroom management in our first lesson. It is kind of intimidating to go up to the front of the classroom and get the students to listen to you. It is a lot easier to get them to work with us now that we have been in the classroom for almost a week. I think that building trust was something that was extremely important.
4. To help your students this week you will: Work on some classroom management skills to get the students to have a good chance of learning from our lesson. We will also use clear instructions for behavior. I also want to work on guiding students to answers without giving it away, it is a lot harder than I thought it would be. A lot of kids try to trick you into giving away the answers!
Great job guys We are also trying to work on some management skills in the classroom. I like your ideas. I also think trust is very important in the classroom. Good luck with the rest of your time in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteClassroom management can be the hardest. I agree with you about clear instructions, guiding students and hard to go to the front and teach.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to read you made a new digital story. I would love to see it.
I really like how you guys go in early and figure out a game plan with the teacher for the day. Also I am with you on improving this week with clear instructions for the students. Sometimes I don't make things as clear and straight forward as I should. Sounds like you two are having fun! Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteI loved the picture of your Social Studies activity that Shayla posted on FB. It looks like so much fun, and I bet the kids will remember that lesson for ever. I love that you guys were able to incorporate art into the lesson, that has been really hard for us to do in Math. Good work ladies!
