Me and my partner, Kristie, start out our day at 9:00 right when school starts. The students come in and start working on their DOL (daily oral language) then the teacher goes over the answers with the students. The students then move on to either spelling or math, depending on the day. At 10:35, the students go to keyboarding for 40 minutes, when they come back they usually do DEAR which stands for drop everything and read. The teacher even participates in reading too. After DEAR they sometimes do writing or speed writing, which is very fun for the students. Speed writing is when the teacher puts a picture from her computer of something funny or interesting on the whiteboard and she gives the students a couple minutes to write a paragraph about the picture and then she has a few students share. The students absolutely LOVE this! At 11:55 they go to lunch.
2. Describe your favorite part of the day.
My favorite part of the day is when I get to teach. My cooperating teacher lets me and Kristie teach every day. WHICH I ABSOLUTELY LOVE! Today we were observed while teaching math and I was a bit nervous, but overall our supervisor said we did a great job, so that made me feel better. I also love the opportunity to help individual students and having one on one time with them. I am so excited to help them with guided reading tomorrow.
3. What went well, what didn't work, and what did you change?
Me and Kristie use a few different managing skills than our cooperating teacher and let me tell you...THEY LOVE IT and IT WORKS! We have taught them "class class" "yes yes" and "teach teach" "ok ok," we also use the fill in the squares using a picture of a turkey for good behavior. We found a turkey coloring page online that is a color by number, so we let the students color in a certain amount of spaces each day for good behavior....they respond very well to this and I absolutely LOVE how well behaved they are when we teach.
Our math lesson on teaching divisibility rules was too long today and the students were losing interest. Next time I get the opportunity to teach this lesson, I would definitely teach the divisibility rules to them in 2 lessons.
I am learning something new everyday, whether its from my cooperating teacher or the students.
4. To help your students this week you would...
This week and in the future I will make sure the lessons I teach are not going to be long and to keep them within the time frame given. I see some students who struggle and all I want to do is help them, so since the teacher has 2 extra helpers this month (me and Kristie) I feel the best way I can help my students is to help those that are struggling and give them the help they need while they can get it.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE LOVE TEACHING
and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE LOVE THESE STUDENTS!
I have been wondering what DOL's are! THANK YOU! It sounds like your teacher is very good at keeping to a schedule. I have noticed that that is extremely hard and it takes a lot of work! I feel like the day goes by so fast because we cram all these different subjects into a short period of time! That is really cool that you guys get to teach math! That will give you a lot of practice that some of us won't be able to get! I also LOVE teaching! That really is the best part of the day by far! I love that you guys tried the management techniques that we learned in class and that they work for you guys! We have stuck to what the teacher has in place so things don't get too confusing. For the most part it has been ok, but I do wish we would have tried something new/different as well!
ReplyDeleteI also love doing one-on-one time. I got to work with a boy during guided reading the first Friday in field, and he did really well when reading out loud with me. He also seemed genuinely interested in learning what some of the words in his book meant. I love reading and writing, so the meanings of words are a particular interest of mine. I hope guided reading went well!
ReplyDeleteIts funny that you mention time frames, I have found out I suck at estimating the amount of time a lesson will take. Our teacher only has time for social studies on Mondays and Fridays which means our lessons are 45 min. to 1 hour long. It is hard because we were told to make lessons shorter than that. I taught my first social studies lesson on Monday and I had 45 min, I was so worried that I would finish and have nothing to do so I came prepared with another activity. The kids were so into the lesson and participating, they asked a ton of questions and shared their input it was going great until I looked at the clock and realized I had like 3 min. and I was not even close to being done. I need to get better at watching the time and managing class input. I was able to finish my lesson Friday morning but I am hoping I can keep my next lesson in the time frame I have.
ReplyDeleteHey Laurel, I am glad to hear that you your field experience is going wonderfully so far. I liked your comment on how well power teaching is really working for you Brianna and I have not had the opportunity to use power teaching in the classroom we are in but really with how well our students behave we haven't needed much management resources such as power teaching.
ReplyDeleteI hope things continue to go well for you in field, good luck with the rest of your field experience.
Sounds like you are doing great!!! That's so cool that you and Kristie are using the "class class" management strategy! And I also really like the turkey coloring page! I wish I would've used one of those ideas! That sounds great! :) It is also cool that the students AND the teachers get time to read everyday! That is AWESOME! It's not just a reward for when they are done with assignments, but it is scheduled into their day! I want to do that, too!!! :)
